More about the bank

Get one wrong and you see the miss, the right answer and why. A keyword or a clause number finds any question, its answer and its explanation, offline. Every question has a thumbs-down beside it: think one is wrong, say so from the app, and a correction reaches your phone the next time it has signal.

This is a really helpful app which gives useful information to help apprentices in all the different phases in your electrical apprenticeship. The app is easy to navigate and to understand.

Monday’s toolbox talk, given and filed in three taps

  1. 01

    Pick this week’s talk

Written for electrical work in Ireland: a short scene, the points to make, the questions to ask.

A toolbox talk in Sparks, Ladders and work at height: why it is given, a short scene under the heading Picture this, then numbered points to read to the crew.A toolbox talk in Sparks, Ladders and work at height: why it is given, a short scene under the heading Picture this, then numbered points to read to the crew.

    Pass the phone round

Each person signs with a finger under their own name, there and then. Ink on paper still works.

The signing screen in Sparks: the name Aoife Byrne, the declaration I attended this talk and understood it, a signature drawn with a finger above a dotted line, and buttons to move to the next person, clear, or sign on paper instead. The signing screen in Sparks: the name Aoife Byrne, the declaration I attended this talk and understood it, a signature drawn with a finger above a dotted line, and buttons to move to the next person, clear, or sign on paper instead.

    File the sheet

One tap makes the PDF: talk, date, site, every signature beside its name. Made on the phone, no signal needed.

The attendance sheet as a PDF: the talk, the date, the site, what was covered, and a table of names with a signature beside each. Download the sample (PDF, 9 KB).

More about the talks

Fifty-two, in season: winter working in January, sun in June, dark evenings when the clocks go back. Each is built the way talks are remembered, a short scene from a job like yours, then the points, then questions for the crew; each cites the 2005 Act, the General Application Regulations or HSA guidance. Run three jobs and each keeps its own people: nothing is typed twice. When an inspector or an insurer asks what training your people had, the answer is a folder of dated, signed sheets.

Coming next

Less paperwork, for qualified sparks and safety officers

  • Qualified electricians

    Test results into paperwork

Readings entered once, on site, on the phone. The schedule of test results and the handover pack come out as a PDF, ready for the certificate.

  • Safety officers

    RAMS without the retyping

Risk assessments and method statements for electrical work, started from a template, adjusted for the site, signed on the phone.

  • Both

    Permits and inspections, filed

Permits to work on isolation and site inspection checklists with photos, kept with the toolbox talk records for the safety file.

Not in the app yet, and we would rather build them with you. Tell us what takes up your evenings, or sign up at the foot of the page for a note when they arrive.

How a licence works

It works wherever you do

  1. Enter your key once

Anywhere you have a connection. That is the only moment Sparks needs one.

  2. Then a month at a time, offline

The licence lives on the phone. Open the app and you are straight in, on any job.

  3. It renews itself

Next time you have signal it renews in the background, while you carry on working.

Any connection will do for that one moment: the wifi at home, a hotspot, a colleague’s phone.

Who writes it

Written on the tools, checked against the book

Sparks is the brainchild of Karl O’Hare, an electrician with over 25 years’ experience in everything electrical, field tested with the sparks on Irish sites, against the current edition of I.S. 10101 and the HSA’s guidance. Every answer names the clause it rests on, so you can check it yourself.

  • When I was studying I found it very difficult, and myself and a lot of others paid for after-hours lessons, €50 per hour. I definitely would have used this instead of at least one or two of those lessons.

    Jack O HareQualified electrician
  • I would definitely see it being useful for apprentices but also for electricians and engineers like myself who didn’t serve their time, to reinforce their knowledge.

    Karl HalpinEngineer
  • The app is a fresh alternative to studying through books and notes and I’m learning more this way as it’s more engaging.

    Brian Evans
  • Found the app good to use and could see it being helpful for before exam time.

    Ryan Maguire
  • Great idea, already looking forward to using it.

    Alex Murphy
  • I really like the idea and it’s something I would use.

    Sean Downey
  • Love the idea and will definitely be using this app.
